London Quds Day 2017
On the anniversary of Israel's brutal July 2014 attack on Gaza, thousands of people, from all walks of life, from all faiths and none, from all ethnicities and cultures came together for the annual international Al Quds Day march through London on Sunday 3rd July 2016. Coaches from all the major cities in UK, from as far apart as Glasgow to Newport, brought people together, united for Palestine.
Al Quds Day - the last friday of Ramadan - is an international day of the oppressed when people from all backgrounds and beliefs, from across the world - from Nigeria to China, from Cuba to South Africa, from Canada to Indonesia, come together united in solidarity with Palestine.
It was established 37 years ago on 16th August 1979, on the first Ramadan after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, that Imam Khomeini inaugurated Al-Quds Day, the last friday of Ramadan, as a day for solidarity with the oppressed in the world, in particular the oppressed of Palestine. He said: "Al Quds Day is the day for the weak and oppressed to confront the arrogant powers". Every year since that day, without exception, we have seen Al Quds Day demonstrations all around the world.

The London Al Quds Day march witnessed a sea of support for Palestine pour onto the streets of London starting outside the BBC building, they marched through some of the busiest streets of the capital.. down Oxford Street, and Regent Street, followed by Bond Street. They marched on the US embassy - the greatest supporter, financier and armer of Israel's genocide against the Palestinians - for a mass rally. A wonderful cross-section of speakers addressed the crowds, including a Rabbi and an Imam. Sandra Watfa from Inminds spoke passionately about the plight of Palestinian prisoners, specifically highlighting Israel's illegal policy administrative detention where Palestinians are charged without charge or trial for indefinite period of time with no means to defend themselves. She raised the case of Palestinian hunger striker Bilal Kayed who was scheduled to be released on 13th June after having completed his exorbitant sentence of 14 and a half years in an Israeli dungeon has been given a 6 month administrative detention order with no reason, charge or trial. To protest he has been on hunger strike since 15th June 2016.
We had video messages of solidarity from the legendary Palestinian freedom fighter Leila Khaled and also from an ex-detainee from Gaza, Amjad Abu Arqoud who was caged in an Israeli dungeon for 9 years. Unfortunately, due to suspected sabotage, the big video screen, although having been paid for, never arrived.
There was small a counter-protest of a hundred Zionist rabble with the terrorist Jewish Defence League at its vanguard. The JDL (aka Kach, founded by the terrorist Meir Kahane) has been outlawed even in Israel and the USA after perpetrating massacres in Palestine and murders and attempted bombings of Mosques in the USA. Their UK leadership Roberta Moore and Robert de Jong, wearing Kahane t-shirts, mingled with the CST and the Zionist Federation. Roberta Moore had previously founded the Jewish branch of the racist English Defence League. The Conservative Friends of Israel MP Mathew Offord and the President of the Board of deputies of British Jews Jonathan Arkush warmly addressed this rabble as did other leading lights of the zionist movement in the UK.
