[Boycott - Other News] Israel's cabinet decides to send 4 Jordanian prisoners home to serve out sentences
Associated Press, International Herald Tribune 1 July 2007 Israel's Cabinet on Sunday decided to send four Jordanian prisoners home to continue serving prison terms for 1990 cross-border attacks, complying with a long-standing Jordanian request, an official in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office said.
The official, who spoke on condition on anonymity under civil service rules regarding the closed-door meeting, said the four are expected to be transferred across the border later this week.
Three of the men infiltrated Israel from Jordan carrying weapons in November 1990 and got into a firefight with Israeli troops that killed Capt. Yehuda Lifshitz. The other killed Sgt. Pinchas Levy, in a separate incident. The attacks took place before Israel signed a peace accord with Jordan in 1994.
In February, Olmert said he had accepted a request from King Abdullah II of Jordan to send the four back to Jordan, where they would serve out their prison sentences. At the time, a Jordanian official said legal issues still had to be worked out.
The Israeli official said Israel has received an assurance from Jordan that the four, who are currently serving life sentences in Israeli jails, will serve at least 18 more months in prison in Jordan.
