Election Survey:

Questionnaire not returned.

If you live in this constituency we request that you email our sample letter to this candidate asking them to respond - its your right to know what your candidate stands for. Failure to respond may be interpreted as a candidates unwilling to clarify his or her real position and a disregard for the concerns of Muslim constituents.

Other Information

After resigning from the cabinet in May 2003 she is well know for her vocal attacks on Tony Blair on issues ranging from the legality of the war to the UK's participation in bugging the UN, she has even demanded his resignation on occasion.

But it must be remembered that at the time, when it mattered, she supported the attack on Afghanistan and the war on Iraq. When principled comrades like Robin Cook resigned on the eve of war, she decided to stay: "I decided that I should not weaken the Government at that time.."[1]

And later, as International Development Secretary responsible for the humanitarian effort in Afghanistan she saw nothing immoral in dropping cluster bombs followed by food parcels on the same people, sometimes at the same time! The Mine Action Centre (and Medicins San Frontier) revealed that the cluster bombs like the food parcels were both yellow in colour and "many children pick up bomblets thinking they contain food".[2]

Whilst she was in government she didn't take part in the vote deciding if indefinite detention without charge without trial should be legalised, although after her resignation she did oppose the recent call for control orders and house arrests for innocent people who have not been charged with anything.

Conclusions

With Muslims forming 30% of the constituency we had hoped to be able to find a candidate which we could recommend to Muslims, unfortunately we couldn't find one. Either we did not have enough information on a candidate (no questionnaires returned) or otherwise we had reservation due to their past history.

Election Guide Home

* Our figures are conservative reflecting the minimal strength of the Muslim vote:

1. The Muslim population figures are taken from the 2001 census. The religion question was optional and many Muslims did not feel comfortable giving out this information if wasn't a requirement. (This writer knows of two members of his own family who did not answer this question out of fear that one day this data will be used to discriminate against them).

2. Our statistics assume only 64% of the Muslim population is of voting age (18+). This figure is much lower than the national average because the Muslim population is the youngest in the country with 34% under the age of 16 (the national average is 20% under 16). Please note that our estimates are slightly less than those given on the MCB website.
