IAP, along with Arab and Muslim community leaders, will call for a boycott of Jewel- Osco Food stores in the wake of Jewel's decision to sponsor the 2002 Israel Solidarity Day Event on April 28, a major Fundraiser organized to help the Israel's war machine. Already hundreds of Jewel cards have been collected from Arabs and Muslims who are no longer willing to shop at Jewel.

Despite thousands of calls from Arabs, Muslims, and other Jewel shoppers to the chain's PR director, Sharon Nolan, protesting Jewel's solidarity with Israel, Jewel-Osco has not indicated it will drop its support of the April 28th event.

This boycotting is so critical. There is a mountain of evidence pointing to Israel's killing of Palestinian civilians, and Israel's widespread destruction of Palestinian homes, schools, hospitals, camps and towns. On a recent trip to the Jenin refugee camp where a massacre was committed against Palestinians, UN special envoy to the Middle East, Terje Roed-Larsen said," What we are seeing here is hor-rifying .. horrifying scenes of human suffering." He further expressed, " Israel has lost all moral ground in this conflict."

In Jerusalem, the Israeli human right group B'Tselem charged that Israel has tortured Palestinians who have been detained for interrogation during the current military offensive. The group said in a statement that the interrogation methods included breaking the toes of prisoners.

On April 6 the international Red Cross issued a statement calling the Israeli Army's behavior " totally unacceptable" for attacking its staff, vehicles and buildings. In addition the Red Cross has been de-nied access to several towns where injured bled to death, especially in Jenin.

Arab and Muslim members will not do business with companies that support horror and destruction against the Palestinian people who are daily suffering under Israel's illegal military occupation. The Arab and Muslim community will be calling on Jewel to act responsibility and withhold any of its support to Israel.

What: IAP, Arab and Muslim community leaders will call for a boycott of Jewel stores.

Where: Muslim Community Center (MCC). 4380 N. Elston Ave. Chicago

When: Wednesday April 24, 2002 at 1:15 PM.
